And I still love LoL! But it just doesn't compare. If I was asked whether I would rather play LoL from a fresh perspective, or TLOU, I would choose TLOU every time even though I've spent about the same amount of money on both (and LoL was optional, of course) and a LOT more time in LoL than TLOU. I have played thousands of hours in League of legends over 5ish years. I think back on it and it makes me happy, it is time I thoroughly enjoyed. When I think about the game, I think of my attachments to the characters, my love of the world they created, the messages sent in the game, the meatyness of the combat. What is the length? What is my "dollar per hour" fun amount? Honestly, it doesn't matter at all.

I would without question pay full release price to re-experience The Last of Us fresh. This obsession with quantifying "fun" into a dollar amount is a red herring. I think that this entire topic is a manifestation of what I think is a currently popular but ultimately misguided approach to video games.

  • To determine if a game was worth purchasing I consider cost to hours played beyond the first ~3 hours as my attention span is usually short enough that I will not bare multiple hours of a game beyond the point at which I'm no longer having fun.
  • In my opinion a fair return on investment is any game that falls under $1/hour played.
  • I pay $50 or more for a 3 hour sporting event my team may lose > Example, I paid $5 for Terraria and have hundreds of hours played Compared to other forms of entertainment, the return on investment is absurd
  • I believe gamers expectations far exceed the amount of money we pay for a game.
  • When asked to evaluate whether or not a game was worth purchasing, what factors do you consider?.
  • What your personal $$/hour paid expectation for a good game?.
  • Are gamers expectations too high for the price we pay for games?.
